How do we select donors?
All sperm and egg donors undergo a rigorous selection process, as established by Spanish Law 14/2006 on Assisted Reproduction Techniques.
This process ensures that only individuals who meet all medical, physical, and psychological requirements can become donors.
Selection Criteria
Medical Evaluation
Review of general health and medical history.
Genetic Analysis
Karyotype and carrier genetic screening to detect hereditary diseases.
Psychological Assessment
Review of mental health history, emotional stability, and understanding of the process.
Strict Health Monitoring
Medical follow-up to ensure overall good health.
Legal and Ethical Criteria
Compliance with Spanish legislation and ethical standards.
Donor Assignment
Donation is anonymous, confidential, and altruistic. Therefore, neither the donor nor the recipient can know the identity of the other party. The reproductive center is responsible for making the most appropriate assignment to ensure maximum compatibility and safety.
Phenotypic Compatibility
Maximum physical similarity is sought between the donor and the recipient (skin color, eyes, hair, body type…).
Blood Group and Rh Factor
To avoid incompatibilities that could affect the pregnancy.
Medical, Genetic, and Psychological History
Only healthy donors who have passed all medical, genetic, and psychological tests required by law are selected.
Other Specific Medical Criteria
Optionally, a genetic matching or carrier genetic screening can be performed between the donor and the patient. This test identifies whether both are carriers of common recessive disorders.
